Organizational Overview
Financial Position
We have just completed our March financial analysis. We are showing a reserve in FY’07 of $290,000.
Business Manager Lois Withers and I have begun drafting fiscal ’08 budget. In the coming few months, we look forward to working with the whole LSB, and the finance committee in particular, to complete the budget drafting process. Please let us know the priorities we should consider in terms of allocating resources for special projects.
I also hope the LSB, with direction from the fund raising committee and help from me,
will commit to raising at least $25,000 in fiscal ’08. $25k is the goal we set for the LSB to raise in this fiscal, and about $2,200 has been raised so far. I am very happy you recreated the fund raising committee, and I look forward to working with this committee to help reach this $25,000 goal by September 30^th , 2007.
*Facility:* We have one bid (and are in the process of acquiring two more) on some of the construction work to partially retrofit our building. The foundation also needs a closer look to determine the extent of the damage, and we hope to have an idea of the extent of the work that needs to be done before the end of summer.
Community Advisory Board
I have received emails from LSB members asking about the new community advisory board after I reported in April that I had put together a new advisory board to work March 2007 through March 2008.
My apologies for not responding to your email requests for specifics sooner, but I hope you can understand if I report to you more than once a month and on specific questions by individual LSB members, it would be very difficult to perform my daily duties of managing the station’s daily operations. These past few weeks have been especially busy for me with travels to the NFCB and the PNB, planning the spring fund drive, launching a planned giving campaign, and initiating an annual staff performance review.
I hope you accept my apology for what has already happened, allow me to provide you with a comprehensive report of my work only once a month, and also have enough trust in my intentions in performing my responsibilities to the fullest of my ability instead of assuming that I have interest in undermining your work or authority.
I completed forming the new KPFA CAB in late February per CPB funding requirements. As I reported last month, the body consists of six listeners from various communities throughout our listening area. The process to recruit and confirm commitment from these six members was completed over a five-week period. I have encouraged the members to expand the body by recruiting at least one person each to ensure the diversity and independence of the body.
Below is the list of the members that have committed to serving KPFA in this capacity:
Aaeeshah Clottey
Vien Truong
Margaret Allen
Leah Ditullio
Alfredo Lopez and
Matthew Shenoda
As the CPB requires the CAB perform its duties independent of the governing board and advise the governing board on various activities (see below), I have communicated these requirements and guidelines to the body and have asked they inform us on their progress as soon as possible. Currently, Vien Truong chairs the body.
The CPB requires:
A. Each station that is not owned by a State, a political or special purpose subdivision of a State, or a public agency must do the following --
1. establish a community advisory board that is independent of the community licensee's governing body;
2. undertake good-faith efforts to assure that --
a. its advisory board meets at regular intervals;
b. the members of the board regularly attend the meetings of the advisory board;
c. the composition of the community advisory board is reasonably representative of the diverse needs and interests of the communities served by the station.
B. In addition, each licensee required to have a community advisory board must also permit the community advisory board to perform the following activities:
1. establish and follow its own schedule and agenda, within the scope of the community advisory board's statutory or delegated authority;
2. review the programming goals established by station;
3. review the community service provided by the stations;
4. review the impact on the community of the significant policy decisions rendered by the station; and
5. advise the governing board of the station whether the programming and other significant policies of the station are meeting the specialized educational and cultural needs of the communities served by the station. The advisory board may make recommendations to the governing board to meet those specialized needs.
_Spring Fund Drive_
Our spring fund drive is underway and runs to Wednesday, May 23^rd . Our goal is $900,000 including pledges to our sister station KFCF. We are committed to ending the drive on time, and with the excellent focus and dedication of all staff, I am confident we will meet our goal. It would be tremendous help if LSB members could dedicate a few hours this weekend and through the end to help us out in the phone room. I would also like to ask you to please encourage your friends and family members to pledge their support.
